Buying Property in Bulgaria

Bulgaria currently has some restrictions on the sale for property to Foreigners. As a foreigner you are allowed to buy property in Bulgaria, land related rights (called servitudes, such as the right of access to the street), and the right to build, but you cannot buy the land itself.

To buy land in Bulgaria, you must make the purchase via a Bulgarian registered company, this restriction is under discussion and may be modified in the accession to the EU (2007).

Until recently if the property was located in a border area or other areas considered important in terms of National Security, the property purchase would have had to been approved by the Government. As of May 2004, amendments to the Foreign Investment Act, remove this limitation.
